Shopify Store with a US LLC from India: Payments, SSN Rules & Setup (2027)
You can run a Shopify store with a US LLC from India, but taking payments is the step that trips most founders up. Shopify's own payment system asks US merchants for an SSN or ITIN, and many Indian owners have neither. This guide explains the rule, the payment options that usually work instead, and the steps to set up your store properly.
Can you run a Shopify store with a US LLC from India?
Yes. Shopify does not require you to live in the US to open a store. The hard part is the payment layer. Shopify's built-in payment system, Shopify Payments, has its own identity checks, and those checks depend on where your business is based.
You can also sell on Shopify from India without a US company. A US LLC is useful when you want a US bank account, US-based payment tools and a US-facing brand. Read US LLC for Indian residents: is it legal? before you decide.
The Shopify Payments SSN rule
For US merchants, Shopify Payments asks for the owner's SSN or ITIN, in addition to the company's EIN. According to Shopify staff replies in its community forum, an EIN alone is not accepted for US Shopify Payments.
That creates a gap for many Indian founders:
- You have a US LLC and an EIN.
- You have a US business bank account.
- You do not have an SSN.
- You may not have an ITIN either.
Some forum users claim they got through with only an EIN, but those reports are mixed and not confirmed by Shopify. Shopify can change its terms at any time, so check its current requirements for your country and business type before you plan around it.
Can an ITIN solve the problem?
An ITIN can be accepted in place of an SSN in some Shopify Payments cases, according to Shopify staff. But getting one takes time and paperwork, and not every non-resident LLC owner needs or qualifies for one. Read ITIN for non-resident LLC owners to see whether it makes sense for you.
Do not get an ITIN just because of Shopify. Compare it with the simpler payment options below first.
Payment options if you cannot use Shopify Payments
Most Indian founders with a US LLC use a third-party payment provider. The usual choices are:
- Stripe. Many foreign-owned US LLCs use Stripe for cards and wallets. You will need your LLC documents, EIN and a US bank account. See Stripe for a US LLC from India.
- PayPal. Useful as an extra checkout option, though approval depends on how well your documents match. See PayPal for a US LLC from India.
- Other gateways. Availability depends on your business type and risk profile. Many ask for owner ID, and some ask for an SSN.
- Manual payment methods. These work for some stores, but they usually lower conversion, so treat them as a last resort.
When you use a payment provider other than Shopify Payments, Shopify may charge an additional transaction fee depending on your plan. Check the current fee on your plan's pricing page before you calculate your margins.
Which country and address should you use for the store?
Keep your store, LLC, bank account and payment provider details consistent and truthful. Use the legal LLC name, the LLC's business address and the right owner details.
You may see forum advice about changing a store's country setting to get past a payment limit. Be careful with this. Mismatched details across your store, payment account and bank are a common reason for holds, reviews and closed accounts. If you are unsure which setting is correct for your situation, ask Shopify and your payment provider directly.
Do you actually need a US LLC for your Shopify store?
Not always. Before you form a company, ask:
- Are most of my customers in the US? If not, an LLC may add cost without adding much benefit.
- Do I need a US payment provider or US bank account? If yes, an LLC helps.
- Can I cover the yearly cost? State fees, a registered agent and tax filings add up. See the best state to form an LLC from India.
- Do I understand the Indian side? Owning a US company has Indian tax and reporting effects. Ask a professional.
If you sell mostly in India or to many countries, a US LLC may not pay off. Some sellers see a Shopify international payout fee on US sales, and an LLC may remove it, but only if most of your sales go to the US. Do the maths on your own numbers.
Step-by-step: set up a Shopify store with a US LLC
- Form your LLC. See how to start a US LLC from India and choose a registered agent.
- Get your EIN. See EIN without SSN.
- Open a US business bank account. See Mercury for non-residents. Use the LLC's exact legal name.
- Create your Shopify store and set your business details to match your LLC records.
- Prepare your policy pages. Add terms of service, a privacy policy, a refund policy and contact details. Payment providers often review these.
- Apply for a payment provider such as Stripe, using the same LLC name, EIN and address everywhere.
- Connect the provider to Shopify and place a few test orders.
- Set up shipping and taxes. Decide how you will fulfil orders and check your sales tax obligations.
- Set up bookkeeping so that every sale, fee and payout is recorded.
Sales tax and US compliance
Selling to US customers can create sales tax duties in some states. Shopify has tools to calculate tax, but you are still responsible for registering and paying where required. Check the rules for the states where you have meaningful sales.
You also have normal LLC duties:
- State filings. Many states require an annual report or fee. See the Wyoming LLC annual report as an example.
- Federal filings. A foreign-owned LLC has yearly federal reporting duties. Read 5472 and 1120 for foreign-owned LLCs.
- Business licences. Depending on your product, you may need local or industry licences. See does an LLC need a business license?.
Getting your Shopify money to India
Your payment provider pays out into your US business bank account. From there you can move funds to India in planned amounts. Read how to transfer money from a US LLC to India and Wise vs Payoneer for a US LLC. Keep clear records of each transfer.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Forming the LLC before checking that your payment setup will actually work.
- Using different business names or addresses across Shopify, Stripe and your bank.
- Entering an SSN or tax ID that is not yours.
- Starting ad campaigns before payments are approved.
- Skipping policy pages, which can delay approval.
- Mixing personal and business money.
- Ignoring sales tax and annual filings.
