Mercury Bank Account for Non-Residents: Requirements & How to Apply (2026)
Ask any Indian founder with a US LLC which bank they use, and there's a good chance the answer is Mercury. It's fully online, built for startups and open to founders who live outside the US.
But Mercury also rejects plenty of applications, and many of them fail for the same avoidable reason: the address.
This guide explains how to open a Mercury bank account for non-residents, step by step, including the one detail that trips up most first-time applicants.
What Is Mercury?
Mercury is a US fintech company that offers business banking: checking accounts, debit cards, transfers and a clean online dashboard. Technically, Mercury itself isn't a bank. Your money is held with its partner banks, which are FDIC members.
For Indian founders, the appeal is simple:
- Apply 100% online, with no US visit required
- No SSN needed, since your LLC applies with its EIN
- A US account in your LLC's name, which payment platforms like Stripe require
- Easy domestic and international transfers
Can Non-Residents Open a Mercury Account?
Yes. Mercury openly supports US companies with founders from around the world. You don't need to be a US citizen or resident.
Your business must meet three conditions:
- It's formed and registered in the US, as an LLC or a corporation
- It has existing or planned US operations, such as US clients, customers or vendors
- It has a valid principal business address (more on this below)
Mercury can't support founders living in certain countries and regions, and it maintains a list on its website. Check it before you apply.
Mercury also doesn't support some industries, including money services businesses, adult entertainment, cannabis, internet gambling and trusts.
The Address Rule That Causes Most Rejections
This is the part most guides get wrong.
Mercury does not accept these as your principal business address:
- Registered agent addresses
- P.O. boxes
- UPS Store addresses
Many founders form their LLC, see their registered agent's US address on their documents and enter it on the Mercury application. That's one of the most common reasons for rejection.
The good news: Mercury does accept international and residential addresses. As an Indian founder, you can list your real home or office address in India as your principal place of business, as long as it's where you actually operate.
Pro tip: Your registered agent still matters; it receives your LLC's legal mail. It just isn't your operating address. Our guide on what an LLC registered agent does explains the difference.
Documents You'll Need
Get these ready before you start the application:
- Formation documents, such as your Articles of Organization
- EIN confirmation letter from the IRS (see our guide on getting an EIN without an SSN if you don't have one yet)
- Passport for every person who owns 25% or more of the LLC
- A clear business description, including what you sell and who your customers are
- Source of funds, meaning where the money in the account will come from
- Your website or online presence, if you have one
How to Apply for Mercury from India: Step by Step
- Start the application on Mercury's website using a business email on your own domain.
- Enter your LLC's legal name and EIN exactly as they appear on your IRS letter.
- Add your principal business address, your actual Indian home or office, not your registered agent's address.
- Describe your business and US activity in plain, specific words.
- List all beneficial owners with 25% or more ownership.
- Upload your documents and complete identity verification.
- Submit and respond quickly if Mercury asks follow-up questions.
Many applications are approved within a few days. Others need extra documents, which is normal for international founders.
Common Reasons Mercury Rejects Applications
- Using a registered agent, P.O. box or UPS address as the business address
- Mismatched details between your EIN letter, formation documents and application
- Vague business descriptions like "online business" or "consulting"
- No clear US connection, with no US clients, customers or plans
- A restricted industry
Common mistake: Re-applying immediately after a rejection without fixing the reason. Read Mercury's feedback carefully, correct the issue, then apply again.
Mercury and Stripe: A Common Pairing
Mercury works well as the payout account for Stripe US, because Stripe requires a US business checking account in your LLC's name. If you plan to accept card payments, our guide to opening a Stripe account for a US LLC from India walks through the full setup.
What About Fees?
Mercury's standard plan is designed to be low-cost, and many founders pay no monthly fee. Paid plans and certain transfers, especially those involving currency conversion, can carry charges. Since pricing changes, check Mercury's current pricing page before you plan your costs.
Moving Money Between India and Mercury
You can send money from Mercury to your Indian bank account, or fund your LLC from India. Remember the India-side rules: as an Indian resident, funding and owning a US LLC usually falls under FEMA's Overseas Direct Investment framework.
